Colour schemes - click on the wheel above and choose a type of colour combination.

Example. Using a blue base colour

Monochromatic
This is the same colour with black and white added to make darker and lighter versions of the base colour. This is very effective in designs.

Contrast
Base colour is supplemented with its complement (colour on the opposite side of the wheel). You can add a small amount of the complement colour for a very interesting effect.

Triade - split complement
Base colour is supplemented with two colours, placed identically on both sides of its complement. Unlike the "sharp" contrast, this scheme is often more comfortable for the eyes, it's softer, and has more space for balancing warm and cold colours.

Tetrade
This scheme is made by a pair of colours and their complements. It's based on the tetrade - the foursome of colours evenly distributed on the fourths of the colour wheel (by 90 degrees). The tetrade is very aggressive colour scheme, requiring very good planning and very sensitive approach to relations of these colours.

Analogic colours
This scheme is made by base colour and the two colours next to it on both sides. They create beautiful low contrast designs You can add the complement for dramatic effect. (check the add complement box above).

Live colour

Adobe Illustrator CS3 has a wonderful feature called the colour guide. Here you can choose a base colour and then Illustrator will create a special colour group. This group can be made from complementary, analogic, triade, tetrade and many other colour combinations. This makes designing with colour much easier. Give it a go!
