Design

Design objectives

  • create a range of designs that attempt to meet the design specifications
  • design, with guidance, tests to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification. (moved from investigate)
  • compare the designs against the design specifications and identify the pros and cons of each design
  • select one design and explain its choice.

Having good ideas is a very important part of Technology.
During the design stage you must experiment with lots of ideas. Think about colours, shapes and the materials you may use.

Don't just draw the first thing that you think about and sit back and say I've finished. Look at the rubric here. You need to do a lot more than that for your 6!

As you design, your ideas may change. Make sure you explain why you decided to change them. Remember it is very important to record all your ideas in your portfolio. Use words and clear sketches to help explain your ideas.

You should develop two or three of your designs. These design ideas must be clearly presented. Other people need to understand exactly what you intend to produce.

As you start to finalize your design ideas you need to test them out. You don't want a factory to make 2,000 copies of your new design if only you think its any good! You should use your design specification to test your designs. You should also ask the opinions of others.

If possible you should ask people from your target group for their opinions. What do they think of your new designs? Which one do they like the best? Your chosen designs need to be evaluated and tested against your design specification.

Select the best design. Justify your choice and develop the design further.

Describe: To write about in detail

Explain: To write about in detail and include reasons why

Justify:  To write about in detail and include reasons why and show why or prove your explanation is correct

Evaluate: To write about your product, an idea or the design process, after carefully thinking, “What is good about it?” and “What is bad about it?”

Questions: Solutions to the design specification

1. Create 3 different toy designs that fulfil your design specification
This should be your OWN work. These designs should be drawn by hand.
Write a short paragraph explaining why you have chosen each toy / game. If you are in a group then you still need to create 3 of your own designs. You will then take your best design to your group.

The final design

2. Select ONE of YOUR OWN toy designs
Draw your design accurately (on paper - DO NOT use the computer at this stage).

3. Evaluate your final design against the design specification

4 Your Group's final choice

In your groups test each group member's design and select one design to be made in your group.Explain your choice.

5. Make accurate drawings (annotated sketches)

You need to draw each part of your design accurately. You could Use proDESKTOP to provide a scaled drawing of your final toy and of each component. This will take some time! You will need to go through the practice tutorials first. Good luck!

  • What type of wood, paint, glue will you use for each component? Why? Annotate the diagrams to include type of wood, required finnish etc.
  • What tools will you need?

7. Evaluation and Approaches to Learning

We will be collaborating within our design group. The approaches to learning area of interaction asks us to reflect on our collaboration skills as well as our organization skills. Under the title of "Design evaluation" you need to add the following to your evaluation document.

A. The Process / Approaches to learning including:

    organization skills. -

time management—including using time effectively in class, keeping to deadlines
self-management—including personal goal setting, organization of learning materials

    • What organizational tools do I have?
    • What aspects of my organization do I need to develop?
    • How can I best organize myself?

    Attitude to work (this unit)

    collaboration

working in groups—including delegating and taking responsibility, adapting to roles, resolving group conflicts, demonstrating teamwork

accepting others—including analysing others’ ideas, respecting others’ points of view, using ideas critically

personal challenges—including respecting cultural differences, negotiating goals and limitations with peers and with teachers

    • How do I work with others?
    • What successes have I had when I have worked with others?
    • How can I work with others; how can they work with me?

    B. The content of your work -

what level do you think you have achieved in this section? Explain your answer.

suggest ways to improve the quality of your work in the future.
