Human Ingenuity: Advertising and Package Design: Pet Food Labels - Packaging Sells

    • A Look at Human Ingenuity and Why we create – Why so much money is spent on packaging (graphics/labels/brand identity etc)

Project Aim

To design a pet food can label that

  • attracts buyers to the product, and
  • supplies all the information required on such a label.

Write a short Design Brief using the information above.

Investigate

  1. Collect pictures of packaged food. You must include at least one of your own photographs.
  2. What different styles of food packaging are there?
  3. What information (text and graphics) is found on pet food packaging?
  4. What parts of this information do you think are:
    1. essential – What must be written on the packaging (by Law)?
    2. non-essential – not absolutely necessary but thought to be desirable?
  5. What do companies add to their packaging to attract the customers?
  6. Do you think that pet food has always been packaged as it is now? If not, what would ‘pet food’ have been like in the past? Do you think that all pets today get 'packaged ‘food’ ? Compare different countries such as Viet Nam, USA, Europe.
  7. What technologies have allowed food packaging to change so much? ( What inventions / materials / machines have changed how we package food? )
  8. What are the impacts of such packaging on the Earth’s resources? Is there anything that can be done to change the situation?
  9. Does packaging sometimes hide the truth or ever lie??
  10. Where does your information come from? Have you kept a record of all information sources? Write a complete MLA bibliography
  11. Create a design specification for your packaging

    1. The Audience- Who you are designing for?
      • The pet food will be sold to .....
    2. Objective - What the successful design must do:
      • The design will attract customers to my product
      • it will ......
    3. Production -
      • What it should look like (Size/colours/etc) - It will ......
      • What information it must contain - It will.....
      • What it should be made from - It will ......
      • Tools needed to make the product- It will ......
      • Time needed to complete it- It will ......

  12. Before moving on to the Design stage, have you gathered enough information on the subject?

As you collect material in your investigation, remember to present it in your design workbooks. This might include samples of pet food packaging as well as the answers to the questions above.

Design

  1. Collect different pictures that you could use as inspiration for your designs
  2. Think of different catch phrases for your food
  3. Think of different brand names for your product
  4. Draw different logos for your packaging
  5. Draw different layout designs for your packaging
  6. Use the design specification to decide the best combination of designs for your packaging
  7. Draw a good draft copy of the design you will make
  8. Explain why you have chosen this design

Plan

  1. Describe what tools you need to make the packaging. Camera? Which Illustrator tools - the type tool? Paper?

ENVIRONMENT WARNING!

It is very important to preserve our environment. The AoI for environment is concerned with the resources that we need and the responsibilities that we have when using them. You will need to complete the following sentences to show that you have thought about these issues. We will look at these again during our evaluation.

    • Awareness: What materials do you need that could cause an environmental problem?
    • Responsibility: What are your responsibilities when making your pet food label?
    • Action: What should you do to try and keep the environmental impact to a minimum?

Reflection : We will reflect on how successful we have been and what impact we have made on the environment during the evaluation stage.

  1. Describe the steps needed to make the packaging.
  • Which computer tools do you need?
  • Which part of your design will you make first? - the logo. the photograph.....

Remember. Your poster MUST be completely ORIGINAL. All your own photographs, images and words.
  1. Describe when you will do these things (time plan).
  2. Evaluate your plan. Maybe you think your original design is too difficult to make. Do you need to change your design? If it is too difficult., say why you think it is too hard to make and change the design. If it is not too difficult, explain how confident you are in completing the poster in time. What problems do you think you will have? What will be the hardest to do? What will be the easiest?
  3. Check the assessment rubric. Have you done enough for a 6?

Create

  1. Make your packaging! You should NOT use Clip art or Word art.
  2. You must keep a diary of what you have done each day. This is called a process journal. It should include:
    • Screen grabs
    • any changes you have made to your design specification or plan. Explain why you have made these changes.
  3. Make sure every word and image is exactly where it should be. Is everything aligned? Are the pictures clear? Make any necessary changes.
  4. Use Print preview. Make any necessary changes.
  5. Print a rough copy (called a proof). Check it. Make any necessary changes.
  6. Get your proof signed off by your teacher. This means that you show your design to your teacher and he or she will check it one more time. If everything is OK they will sign it to show that you are ready for the final colour print.
  7. Check the correct paper is in the printer. Print your work
  8. Make your container
  9. Check the assessment rubric. Have you done enough for a 6?

Evaluation

  1. Write a short paragraph about how well you have worked (time and effort)
  2. Write a short paragraph suggesting ways of improving this
  3. Environmental Reflection : How successful were you in saving your environment? What did you waste and how could you try and prevent this next time?
  4. How successful do you think your design would be in attracting customers? How do you know?
  5. Write a short paragraph about how good your packaging looks. (quality) Use the design specification when you write about this. What is the colour like? How about the lines?
  6. Write a short paragraph about ways of improving the quality of your product.
  7. Check the assessment rubric. Have you done enough for a 6?
