The Design Brief:

All projects will start with a problem to solve. Somebody will need something made by you. It could be a poster, a toy or many other things. This is called the design brief.

Always check the design brief before you start. You must make sure you are designing something your client wants

Task 1: The design brief

Your first design brief:

A nature conservation charity wants you to make something that will encourage people to be environmentally friendly. They would like you to design and make a bedroom clock using the materials available in the workshop.

A design brief should be short (brief) and explains:

    1. Why somebody wants your help - A nature conservation charity wants you to make something that will encourage people to be environmentally friendly.
    2. What they want you to do for them. - they would like you to design and make a bedroom clock
  • Create a subfolder in your Technology Network folder. Name it Time. click here for help
  • Open Microsoft Word and write down the design brief. Save your work. Name the file, design_brief.

Task 2: Looks good to me - Collecting ideas

  • Answer the questions on good design here

Task 3: The final Design Specification

Complete the design specification above as a bulleted list of single sentences starting with It will............. add some of your own if you can.

  • It will................

read Developing a design specification

The design specification is a list of rules that you must follow when deciding what to make.

After your research you can write a Design Specification. It will tell you the following:

size, colour, shape, what your clock will be made from (mdf),

What must the design do?

When you start your own designs, you will need to some information to guide you. Lets look at the way the paper is held onto the pad. What are the most important considerations? Here are some to think about. You will be able to add to the list.

  • It will represent an environmental message
  • ........

Production. Using the work on, Looks good to me, we can add:

  • The clock will have a simple shape
  • The clock will have simple ......................complete the sentence yourself !...
  • The clock will have simple ...................
  • It will look attractive

what materials we can use.

  • It will be made from mdf

How big?

  • It will be no bigger than 300mm x 300mm.

How it will be used

  • It will be used in my bedroom

"Our topic is time is ticking and to me it means we're running out of time to make a difference or global warming is taking over our time... people aren't thinking of the consenquences of what we're doing but it's for our own good.

Cars can be a good example. Cars were invented by people so it's easy for us to travel or or go to places very easily. But cars are very harmful to our environment because of air polution. As everyone knows we need clean and fresh air. But cars help us alot in out daily lives. "

Task 4: How can we Technology encourage people to be environmentally friendly?

It is very important to take care of our environment. The AoI for environment shows that we need to be careful not to waste resources.

Creatre a Mind Map

  • Work in groups of 2 or 3.
  • Write , "How I can be environmentally friendly in Technology" as the centre of your mind map
  • Add the following to your Mind Map:

    • Awareness: What materials do you think you will need that could cause a problem with the environment?
    • Responsibility: What are your responsibilities when making your clock?
    • Action: What can you do to help the environment during this project?

  • Add anything else that you can think of while brainstorming ways to be environmentally friendly.

Technology can encourage people to be environmentally friendly

  • Work in your groups to find out how Technology can be environmentally friendly. You can make another mind map to show your answer if you wish.

TIP: the environment can be the place you live or work as well as the world outside your classroom.

Task 5: Write a Bibliography

Use Easy bib to help you.

Task 6: Evaluation of the Investigation Stage

  1. Evaluate your progress so far, include:
    • The Process - (Approaches to learning)
      1. research skills
      2. organization skills.
      3. Attitude to work (this unit)
      4. suggest improvements.
    • The content of your work -
      1. what level do you think you have achieved in this section? Explain your answer.
      2. suggest ways to improve in the future.

Task 7: Stick the Investigate part of the Rubric into your books

Full Rubric here

Investigate part below:

Investigation

0

You have not reached a standard described by any of the descriptors given below.

1-2

You investigated clock design, collecting information from sources.

3-4

You created a design brief that outlines the design problem. You investigated principles of good design (including line, shape and colour). You have selected pictures from some acknowledged sources. You listed some specifications that must be met by your clock.

5-6

You have created a design brief. You described how Technology and your clock design can be environmentally friendly. You investigated principles of good design (including line, shape and colour and found good examples of each). You have logically organized your chosen pictures and your written work in your portfolio. You have used a broad range of (at least 3) clock examples from the internet and/or pictures each acknowledged using easybib. You have listed a range of specifications that must be met by your clock (a design specification).
