Investigate DESIGN Plan Create Evaluate

Task 1: Lots of ideas

Draw as many thumbnail sketches of possible clock shapes as you can.

  • They should all show a clear outline of an image relating to our Environments unit and the unit question: Technology can encourage people to be environmentally friendly.
  • They should not be very detailed at this point

Look at this web site for help on drawing cartoon animals

Choose 3 designs that you think will be the best for your clock.

  • Explain why you have chosen them. (you could just copy the pictures. But, even better, you could change the pictures slightly so that they become original designs. - maybe you want to change the paws of an animal or create a big belly to hold the clock face
  • clock clock
    clock clock

Create a detailed drawing of each of your 3 chosen designs.

  • include a circle for your clock face and hands
  • Keep the lines simple
  • add colour to your drawings
  • Use good old fashioned pencil - you shouldn't use a computer at this stage)

Now test your designs.

Using a Design Specification
Remember your design specification. We agreed earlier that the best design will:

  • have a simple shape
  • have simple lines
  • .........
  • .........

We need to use this information in order to choose the best design. One way to do this is by using a table:

Shapes that encourage us to be environmentally friendly

Specification point
Design 1
Design 2
Design 3
It will have simple shape
It will have simple lines
It will promote an environmental message
There is space for the clock hands and numbers
complete the table using your own design specification

0 = No

1= poor

2= ok

3= good

4= excellent

The winning design for the clock shapes is......

TASK: 2 Testing your designs

  • Complete the table above.
  • Write down your best design and explain why you have chosen it

Task 3: Draw your final design

This is a funny drawing but it is not a scaled drawing as there are no measuremrnts. This would also be a poor choice as the hands would probably fall off! Oops!
This is a scaled drawing as we have shown the measurements

Make a scaled drawing of your design. It must be no bigger than 30cm x 30cm.

Because you will be given a piece of wood that is cut to 30cm x 30cm you should make your drawing a little bit smaller than this so that it will definately fit. I have made my rhino 28cm tall. If the wood is a bit smaller than 30cm x 30cm it will still fit.

You will need this drawing Later - If you draw it on a separate piece of paper, make sure you stick it into your portflio and keep it safe!

You MUST include a circle with a radius of 8.4cm (this is the length of the big hand of your clock)

Include any numbers / lines that you want to put on your clock face taking care to choose a suitable font.

Task 4: Get ready to plan

  1. Check the assessment rubric here. Have you done enough for a 6?

design

0

You have not reached a standard described by any of the descriptors given below.

1-2

You have drawn one clock design, and made some attempt to describe it.

3-4

You have drawn a few (at least 3) clock designs, selecting one and comparing it against the design specification.

5-6

You have drawn a range of (at least 5) thumbnail sketches and chooses three designs, each compared against the design specification. You have used the results of testing in order to choose one final design.

Task 5: Evaluation

Evaluate your Dewsign work, include:

  • The Process - (Approaches to learning)
    1. research skills
    2. organization skills.
    3. Attitude to work (during design)
    4. suggest improvements.
  • The content of your work -
    1. what level do you think you have achieved in this section? Explain your answer.
    2. suggest ways to improve in the future.

Go to the planning stage.
